Supreme Court Issues Contempt Notice to Kerala Congress Over CJI Targeting Post

The Supreme Court on Friday issued a contempt notice to all office bearers of the Kerala unit of the Indian National Congress following a social media post that targeted Chief Justice of India Surya Kant. A bench comprising Justices Aravind Kumar and Vipul M Pancholi issued the directive while hearing the matter.

The court underscored that the Constitution remains supreme and no individual or political organization is positioned above it. The bench noted that while judgements are open to criticism and freedom of expression is a fundamental right, these principles cannot serve as a shield for intimidation or interference with the administration of justice.

"Authority of the court doesn't require political endorsement; it rests on the rule of law," the bench observed, adding that the independence of the judiciary is not a matter of political convenience. The court emphasized that regardless of the position held by an individual, any attempt to undermine the authority of the court must be addressed firmly.

The bench further stated that once the administration of justice is established, the law must take its course. The order reflects the court's stance on protecting judicial integrity and independence from external pressures or attempts at influence.
