Supreme Court mandates verification of water bodies to ensure environmental protection

The Supreme Court has issued a strong directive emphasizing that judicial authorities cannot remain passive while water bodies across the country face inadequate protection. In its order, the court underscored the critical importance of safeguarding these precious natural resources through systematic verification processes.

The bench directed all state governments and wetland management authorities to undertake physical ground-truthing exercises of water bodies within their jurisdictions. These assessments are intended to establish baseline conditions and identify potential threats to aquatic ecosystems. States that have not already conducted such surveys are required to do so immediately.

As part of the compliance framework, authorities must file affidavits detailing the specific methodology and procedures adopted during the verification process. These submissions will enable the court to monitor the effectiveness of ground-level assessments and ensure that water body protection measures are being implemented appropriately.

The directive reflects growing judicial concern over the degradation of wetlands and other water bodies across India. By requiring systematic documentation and verification, the Supreme Court aims to create accountability among state agencies responsible for environmental stewardship and water resource management.
