Supreme Court orders UGC to warn public against fraudulent educational institutions

The Supreme Court of India has instructed the University Grants Commission (UGC) to launch a comprehensive public awareness campaign cautioning prospective students and parents about fraudulent colleges and educational facilities operating across the country.

The order came in response to a case uncovered in Etah district of Uttar Pradesh, where authorities discovered an unauthorised medical college functioning from a deteriorating building situated in an open field. The discovery exposed the vulnerability of the higher education system to exploitation by operators of fake institutions offering degrees and diplomas without proper accreditation or infrastructure.

The apex court's directive seeks to protect students from enrolling in non-recognised institutions that lack necessary governmental approval, faculty qualifications, and adequate facilities. Such fake colleges pose significant risks to aspiring medical professionals, as degrees obtained from unrecognised institutions are not legally valid and render graduates ineligible for professional practice.

The UGC has been tasked with disseminating information through multiple channels to inform the public about verifying institutional credentials before admission. The commission is expected to maintain updated lists of recognised universities and colleges, enabling students to cross-verify educational institutions before pursuing enrolment.

This intervention by the Supreme Court highlights growing concerns over the proliferation of bogus educational establishments that exploit students seeking affordable degrees. Authorities have intensified efforts to crack down on such operations and strengthen regulatory mechanisms to ensure educational standards across Indian institutions.
