The Supreme Court of India has granted permission for the use of environmentally certified green crackers in Delhi during the Diwali festival, subject to specific temporal constraints designed to minimize air quality impacts. The court's decision allows firecracker usage only during two designated windows: 6:00 AM to 7:00 AM and 8:00 PM to 10:00 PM. These time slots apply on two occasions—the day preceding Diwali and Diwali day itself.

The restriction represents an attempt to balance public sentiment for festive celebrations with growing concerns about air pollution in Delhi, a city that regularly experiences hazardous air quality levels, particularly during winter months coinciding with the festival season. By limiting firecracker bursting to early morning and evening hours, the court aims to reduce the concentration of pollutants during peak traffic hours and minimize disruption to daily activities.

The permission is restricted to green crackers that have been officially certified as meeting environmental standards. These crackers are designed to produce lower levels of harmful particulates and chemical emissions compared to conventional firecrackers. The court's conditional approval underscores ongoing judicial efforts to address the complex intersection of cultural practices and environmental protection in urban India.

The decision comes after years of litigation and public interest petitions regarding firecracker use during Diwali. Environmental groups and health experts have consistently raised concerns about the spike in air pollution following the festival, while residents and religious organizations have sought to preserve traditional practices.
