A two-judge bench of the Supreme Court comprising Justices MM Sundresh and PB Varale posted the matter relating to challenges against the Waqf (Amendment) Act, 2025 to January next year during a hearing on Tuesday. The bench has set a December 31 deadline for completion of all pleadings in the case.
The court permitted applicants who had filed interlocutory applications to convert them into full writ petitions within two weeks. The nodal counsel representing the respondents has been directed to compile all judgments cited by the petitioners and serve copies to all parties.
According to submissions made before the bench, the case involves five lead petitions, with 135 other petitions converted into interlocutory applications. The Additional Solicitor General was directed to file responses to written submissions submitted by the petitioners.
The bench adopted a structured approach to case management, permitting parties to file comprehensive written submissions that will be compiled for consideration. This procedure aims to streamline the hearing process ahead of the substantive arguments scheduled for early 2027.
