The Supreme Court has set aside an order by the Rajasthan State Election Commission that had blocked approval for a voter awareness campaign, in a significant victory for civil society advocates seeking to boost electoral engagement.
The bench intervened after considering a petition filed by social activists Aruna Roy and Nikhil Dey, co-founders of the Mazdoor Kisan Shakti Sangathan, a grassroots organization focused on workers' and farmers' rights. The court found merit in their arguments that denying permission for the awareness initiative was unjustified.
The decision underscores judicial support for voter education initiatives aimed at encouraging greater participation in democratic processes. Such campaigns typically focus on informing citizens about voting procedures, registration requirements, and their electoral rights.
Roy and Dey have long been active in promoting transparency and accountability in governance, including their involvement in campaigns leading to India's Right to Information Act. The court's intervention reflects growing recognition of the role civil society organizations play in strengthening democratic institutions.
The verdict is expected to pave the way for the awareness campaign to proceed in Rajasthan, potentially serving as a precedent for similar initiatives across other states.
