Supreme Court seeks government action on tribal child deaths in MP

The Supreme Court of India has initiated proceedings seeking comprehensive responses from the Union government, the Madhya Pradesh administration, and Chhattisgarh authorities regarding the deaths of approximately 32 children from the Baiga tribe in the Balaghat region.

The court has directed the respondents to submit detailed information on compensation mechanisms being offered to affected families and the steps undertaken to safeguard the welfare of Baiga tribal children in the area. The Baiga community, classified as a Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Group, faces significant health and socioeconomic challenges that have drawn scrutiny from child welfare advocates and rights organisations.

Barigat district, located in eastern Madhya Pradesh, is home to a substantial Baiga population. The mortality incidents have raised concerns about access to healthcare, nutrition, and basic amenities for tribal communities in remote regions, issues that have persistently challenged implementation of welfare schemes across central India.

The court's intervention underscores the judiciary's role in monitoring government accountability in addressing humanitarian crises affecting marginalised populations. Officials are expected to furnish their responses within a stipulated timeframe, which will inform the court's assessment of systemic gaps in tribal child protection and health intervention programmes.
