Supreme Court set to quash NEET protest FIRs against students

The court will establish a committee to address broader concerns arising from the agitation.

The Supreme Court on Monday indicated it would move to quash the bulk of FIRs registered against students involved in the NEET-UG examination protests, accepting the government's submission to limit criminal investigations to approximately 2,873 individuals with documented serious criminal backgrounds.
The development came as petitioners highlighted that Delhi Police had failed to disclose the complete list of FIRs filed during the protests. The government assured the court that investigations would be restricted to persons with genuine criminal histories, significantly narrowing the scope of cases against the largely student-led agitation.
The apex court announced plans to constitute a high-powered committee to comprehensively examine the issues and concerns that emerged from the NEET-UG protests. This move reflects judicial concern over the broader implications of the mass registration of cases against demonstrators.
The decision marks a significant intervention by the Supreme Court in response to the widespread NEET protests that had drawn substantial participation from students across the country. The court's action underscores the distinction between legitimate protest participation and criminal conduct in its approach to the matter.
