The Supreme Court has summoned Shiv Sena leader Sanjay Raut to appear in person on November 17 to address contempt of court charges, while co-accused Nikhil Wagle has been asked to participate virtually in the proceedings.
Show-cause notices were issued following a contempt plea filed by the Supreme Court Bar Association against both individuals. The notices require them to explain their alleged violations of court orders or risk proceedings under the Contempt of Courts Act, 1971.
The contempt case stems from allegations related to statements or actions deemed to have undermined the authority or dignity of the court. The Supreme Court Bar Association, which acts as the custodian of judicial independence and court procedures, initiated the legal action in this regard.
Contempt of court charges can result in penalties including fines or imprisonment. The appearance of Raut in person, as opposed to virtual participation granted to Wagle, suggests the court views the matter with particular seriousness regarding the Shiv Sena politician's involvement.
The November 17 hearing will determine whether sufficient evidence exists to proceed with formal contempt proceedings against either individual. Both parties are expected to respond to the show-cause notices prior to the scheduled court date.
