Supreme Court tightens screws on traffic fine defaulters with vehicle curbs

The Supreme Court has issued orders to impose strict restrictions on vehicle owners who have failed to settle their traffic fines, aiming to boost compliance and clear the mounting backlog of outstanding e-challans. A bench directed that vehicles with unpaid electronic traffic citations be blacklisted to prevent their sale or transfer until the dues are cleared.

The court was apprised that approximately ₹49,194.05 crore in e-challan revenue remains outstanding across India, highlighting the scale of non-compliance among motorists. The bench expressed concern over the substantial accumulation and emphasised the need for a more robust collection mechanism.

The Supreme Court also called for enhanced deployment of technology in traffic enforcement and penalty collection systems. The directive aims to ensure that vehicle registration and licence renewal processes are linked to outstanding traffic violations, creating a direct consequence for defaulters and incentivising timely payment of fines.

The order represents a significant tightening of enforcement against traffic violations and seeks to address the administrative challenge posed by large-scale non-payment of fines across Indian roads.
