Supreme Court to hear plea challenging electoral voter list revision process

The Supreme Court of India will hear submissions from opposition lawmakers today challenging the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process used to revise voter lists ahead of elections. The petition, filed by 13 opposition leaders, questions the methodology and implementation of the SIR procedure by the Election Commission of India.

Among those who have challenged the process is AIMIM president Asaduddin Owaisi, who has separately moved the court arguing that the SIR procedure raises constitutional concerns regarding voter eligibility and electoral fairness.

The bench is expected to simultaneously hear arguments on a related matter concerning the removal of Jantar Mantar in New Delhi from the list of designated protest sites. Opposition parties have expressed concerns that limiting protest locations could impede democratic expression during the electoral process.

The hearing comes at a time of heightened scrutiny over voter registration procedures across Indian states. The opposition has alleged that the SIR process disproportionately affects certain demographic groups and may be used to influence electoral outcomes.
