Supreme Court to rule on Tejpal surrender plea before hearing conviction appeal

The Supreme Court has indicated it will prioritise ruling on Tarun Tejpal's petition against surrendering before the court proceeds to hear the Goa Government's separate appeal seeking enhanced punishment in the case.

Tejpal, the former editor-in-chief of investigative news magazine Tehelka, was convicted in a sexual assault case by a Goa court. He has challenged the conviction in the apex court while also filing a plea against complying with the surrender order.

Meanwhile, the Goa Government has moved the Supreme Court seeking an enhanced sentence, arguing that the original punishment does not adequately reflect the severity of the offence. The state's legal team contended that the case warrants a life sentence given the nature and circumstances of the crime.

The sequencing decision by the Supreme Court means the court will first settle the procedural matter of Tejpal's surrender obligation before advancing to the substantive question of whether the conviction should be upheld or the sentence increased. The timeline for hearings on both matters remains to be determined.
