Supreme Court upholds five-year terms for barangay and SK officials

MANILA—The Supreme Court has affirmed the validity of Republic Act No. 12326, which lengthens the tenure of barangay officials and Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) members from three years to five years. The ruling, issued by now Chief Justice Rodil, settles the constitutional question regarding the expanded term limits for grassroots government representatives.

The decision confirms that the next Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan Elections (BSKE) will take place in November 2028, establishing a clear electoral calendar for the nation's local government units. This marks a significant extension in the governance cycle at the barangay level, the smallest administrative division in the Philippine government system.

The five-year term aligns barangay and SK officials' tenure with that of municipal and provincial officials, creating consistency across local government structures. This synchronization is intended to improve administrative efficiency and reduce the frequency of electoral activities at the community level.

The Supreme Court's validation ensures legal certainty for barangay and SK officials currently serving under the extended term provisions, allowing them to complete their mandates without legal impediment.
