Suzuki Motor Corporation has instructed its network of suppliers in India to compress their production weeks in a strategic shift aimed at enhancing manufacturing quality. The directive marks the first time the Japanese automaker has implemented such a measure across its Indian supply chain, underscoring management's commitment to maintaining standards amid rapid expansion plans.
Maruti Suzuki, the country's largest carmaker and the Indian subsidiary of Suzuki Motor, is targeting significant production growth over the next several years. The company aims to increase annual output from its current level of approximately 2.4 million vehicles to 4 million units by 2030, representing a nearly 67 per cent expansion in capacity.
The shortened production week initiative is intended to allow suppliers more time for quality assurance and component testing, reducing the likelihood of defects reaching assembly lines. Industry analysts suggest the approach reflects lessons learned from previous manufacturing cycles and a determination to maintain product quality standards even as volumes increase substantially.
The directive applies across Suzuki's supply chain in India, affecting numerous automotive component manufacturers who feed into Maruti Suzuki's operations. The company has not disclosed specific details regarding the duration of the shortened weeks or implementation timelines, though the measure is expected to be rolled out progressively across supplier networks.
