Switzerland tops global debt rankings with highest per-capita liabilities

Switzerland has emerged as the world's most indebted country on a per-capita basis, according to a fresh ranking that examines total debt obligations across three major categories: government, household, and corporate debt.

Each Swiss resident carries an average debt burden of approximately $342,240, equivalent to around 3.25 crore Indian rupees. This comprehensive measure incorporates liabilities at all levels of the economy, from federal and cantonal governments to private households and businesses throughout the nation.

The ranking, compiled by Visual Capitalist, highlights the paradox of advanced economies where high levels of debt coexist with prosperity and economic stability. Switzerland's position at the top of the list reflects not only the country's sophisticated financial system and access to credit, but also the structure of its economy, which relies heavily on debt financing for both public infrastructure and private enterprise.

The analysis serves as a reminder that debt levels alone do not determine economic health, as nations with strong institutional frameworks, stable currencies, and robust tax bases can sustain higher debt-to-population ratios than developing economies. Nevertheless, the data underscores ongoing concerns about debt sustainability in mature economies as interest rates fluctuate and fiscal pressures mount globally.
