Sydney Marathon organisers acknowledge medal design featuring Munich landmark
Organisers of the Sydney Marathon have confirmed that commemorative medals awarded to finishers inadvertently feature Munich's Allianz Arena instead of the city's Allianz Stadium. The error has prompted acknowledgment from race officials, who described the mistake as 'unfortunate.'

The Sydney Marathon's commemorative medals were distributed with an image of the Allianz Arena, the football stadium located in Bavaria, rather than Sydney's Allianz Stadium, which was intended to represent the host city. The oversight was identified after medals had been produced and presented to race participants.
Race organisers have not attempted to distance themselves from the printing error, instead acknowledging the mix-up publicly. Officials characterised the mistake as an unfortunate occurrence during the medal design and production process, which typically serves as a keepsake for competitors who complete the endurance event.
The incident highlights the importance of quality control procedures in event merchandise production. Allianz Stadium, located in Sydney's inner west, is a recognised venue in the city and has hosted major sporting events. The Allianz Arena, by contrast, is home to German football club FC Bayern Munich and is situated approximately 17,000 kilometres from Sydney.
It remains unclear whether organisers plan to issue replacement medals or take other remedial action to address the error, though their transparent approach to the matter contrasts with attempts by some event organisers to minimise publicity around similar production mistakes.
