Syed Saddiq calls for Asean action against haze-linked firms

Syed Saddiq has called for coordinated Asean intervention and financial penalties targeting enterprises linked to regional haze pollution, emphasising that economic pressure represents the most potent enforcement tool available.

Speaking in Parliament, the Muar member of parliament stressed the need to address the recurring transboundary haze crisis through targeted measures against the corporate entities responsible for contributing to air quality degradation across Southeast Asia.

"We need to hit them where they hurt the most," Syed Saddiq stated, underscoring the importance of financial consequences in compelling corporate compliance with environmental standards and regional sustainability commitments.

His remarks reflect growing frustration with the recurring nature of haze episodes that affect multiple nations across the region, particularly during dry seasons when agricultural burning and industrial activities intensify. The call for unified Asean action suggests the need for strengthened cross-border enforcement mechanisms and coordinated pressure on multinational corporations operating across the region.

The proposal aligns with broader efforts to strengthen environmental governance in Southeast Asia and establish concrete consequences for companies contributing to transboundary pollution.
