Syrian Kurdish forces integrate with national army after decade of conflict

The Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), a Kurdish-led coalition that spearheaded military operations against Islamic State extremists for over a decade, have formally dissolved following integration with the Syrian national army. The dissolution represents a watershed moment in Syria's ongoing reconstruction after years of civil conflict and the fight against the jihadist militant group.

The SDF emerged as a formidable fighting force in northeastern Syria, drawing primarily from Kurdish military units but also incorporating Arab and other minority fighters. Between 2014 and 2019, the forces played a critical role in territorial operations against ISIL, reclaiming significant portions of Syrian territory held by the extremist organization with support from international coalition forces.

Following the military merger, SDF commanders have begun advocating for cultural preservation measures, particularly regarding the protection and promotion of Kurdish language instruction and use. The emphasis on linguistic and cultural rights reflects concerns among Kurdish communities about maintaining their identity within a unified Syrian state structure.

The integration of the SDF into national armed forces comes as Syria seeks to consolidate control over all territories and rebuild state institutions.
