MANILA — A minor volcanic explosion at Taal Volcano prompted authorities to issue an ashfall advisory for communities in the immediate vicinity of the active volcano on Thursday, October 8. The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) confirmed that a phreatomagmatic eruption occurred at the volcano's main crater, generating ash that is expected to drift toward nearby settlements.

Phreatomagmatic eruptions occur when magma interacts with water, creating explosive activity driven by steam. While the eruption was characterized as minor, Phivolcs warned that fine ash particles would likely affect towns in the surrounding area, potentially impacting visibility and air quality.

The volcano, located in Batangas province approximately 65 kilometers south of Manila, remains one of the Philippines' most closely monitored volcanic systems. Thursday's activity marks the latest in a series of minor eruptive episodes at Taal, which has demonstrated persistent volcanic unrest in recent years.

Residents in affected areas were advised to take appropriate precautions as ashfall develops. Phivolcs continues to monitor the volcano's activity and is expected to issue updates as the situation evolves.
