Taal Volcano shows heightened seismic activity after brief eruption
The Taal Volcano in Batangas province has registered a spike in earthquake and tremor activity following a phreatomagmatic eruption on Thursday. Scientists recorded 20 volcanic earthquakes and nine tremor episodes in a 24-hour period, some lasting up to seven minutes.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) documented the elevated seismic unrest in a bulletin issued Saturday morning, tracking activity across the volatile volcano located south of Metro Manila.
According to Phivolcs data, the tremor episodes ranged from two to seven minutes in duration, indicating sustained underground movement beneath the volcano. The combination of frequent earthquakes and prolonged tremors typically signals magmatic or hydrothermal processes occurring within the volcanic system.
The increased activity follows Thursday's brief phreatomagmatic eruption, which occurs when magma interacts with water or groundwater beneath the volcano's surface. Such eruptions typically generate lower columns of ash and steam compared to purely magmatic events.
Phivolcs continues to monitor Taal Volcano, one of the nation's most active and dangerous volcanoes due to its proximity to populated areas. Residents in nearby communities and officials remain alert to any further changes in volcanic behavior, though the alert status has not been immediately updated.
