Tacloban air quality deteriorates as Indonesian haze persists

TACLOBAN CITY — Air quality monitoring in Tacloban showed elevated concentrations of fine particulate matter on Wednesday, prompting health advisories for vulnerable populations as smoke from Indonesian forest fires drifted across the region.
The Environmental Management Bureau Region 8 reported that while coarse particle levels remained within generally satisfactory ranges, fine particulate matter—the smaller PM2.5 particles capable of penetrating deep into the respiratory system—had increased noticeably. The deterioration reflects the ongoing influence of haze originating from fire activity across the Indonesian archipelago.
Healthy individuals are expected to experience minimal effects from current air quality levels, but children, the elderly, and people with respiratory or cardiovascular conditions have been advised to limit outdoor activities and take appropriate precautions. Residents in affected areas are encouraged to monitor daily air quality updates from environmental authorities.
Transboundary air pollution from Indonesian sources has periodically impacted Philippine air quality during fire seasons. Tacloban and other Eastern Visayas communities remain vulnerable to these atmospheric conditions depending on wind patterns and fire activity across neighboring regions.
