Tacloban suspends classes as heat index soars to dangerous levels

TACLOBAN CITY — The Department of Education Schools Division of Tacloban has ordered the suspension of face-to-face classes for Tuesday and Wednesday, affecting roughly 55,000 elementary and secondary students across the city's public school system.

The decision comes as meteorological forecasts predict a dangerously high heat index of 40 degrees Celsius in the region. School authorities determined that classroom conditions would pose health risks to students and staff, prompting the shift to distance learning modalities.

Students will instead participate in online classes during the two-day suspension period. The schools division has instructed all public schools in Tacloban to implement remote learning protocols to ensure educational continuity despite the extreme weather conditions.

The suspension is part of broader precautions being taken across the region as the Philippines enters its hotter months. Authorities have previously issued advisories urging the public to limit outdoor activities and take necessary precautions during periods of high heat index.
