Tadoba tiger reserve deploys automated system for wildlife waterhole management

Tadoba Andhari Tiger Reserve (TATR) in Maharashtra has launched an innovative sensor-based system designed to streamline the management of wildlife waterholes across the protected area. The initiative represents a significant advancement in conservation technology within India's tiger reserves, according to reserve officials.

The automated system uses sensors to monitor water levels at designated waterholes and automatically controls pump operations based on real-time data. When water levels fall below a predetermined threshold, the pumps activate; conversely, they shut down when adequate water reserves are achieved. This precision-driven approach eliminates manual intervention and ensures consistent water availability for wildlife throughout the reserve.

Field Director Dr. Prabhu Nath Shukla characterized the initiative as a first-of-its-kind endeavor in wildlife waterhole management within Indian tiger reserves. The system addresses longstanding challenges in maintaining optimal water distribution across vast reserve territories, particularly during dry seasons when water scarcity becomes critical for animal survival.

The deployment is expected to enhance wildlife management efficiency while reducing operational costs and human resource requirements. By ensuring reliable water access at multiple points within the reserve, the technology supports the survival and movement patterns of tigers, leopards, and other fauna dependent on these crucial water sources. The initiative underscores Tadoba's commitment to leveraging technological innovation for enhanced biodiversity conservation.
