Authorities in Rangareddy district, Telangana, have arrested a tahsildar and a surveyor on charges of accepting a bribe of ₹20 lakh. The arrests were made following a trap operation conducted by anti-corruption officials who caught the two officers allegedly receiving the illicit payment.
The tahsildar, a revenue department official responsible for land records and revenue collection, and the surveyor, who conducts land measurements and demarcation, were taken into custody after the sting operation. The ₹20 lakh was reportedly demanded in exchange for providing favourable land-related documentation and services.
The case adds to the growing list of corruption charges against government officials in the state. Officials from the Anti-Corruption Bureau conducted the operation after receiving a complaint regarding the illegal collection of funds. Preliminary investigations suggest the officials had been engaging in the practice for some time, exploiting their positions to extort money from citizens requiring land-related services.
Authorities are conducting further inquiries to ascertain the full extent of the alleged illegal activities and to determine if other officials were involved in the scheme. The case highlights ongoing concerns about corruption within the revenue department's administrative machinery across the region.
