Taiwan expects the United States to maintain its commitment to strengthening the island's defence capabilities regardless of the outcome of the midterm elections, according to Defence Minister Wellington Koo. Speaking on Thursday, Koo highlighted Taiwan's longstanding relationship with Congress, noting that military support for the island has traditionally transcended party lines in Washington. The minister's comments suggest confidence that shifts in US congressional composition will not undermine the established framework for arms sales to Taiwan. Taiwan has long relied on regular defence purchases from the United States as a key pillar of its security strategy amid ongoing tensions with China. The remarks come as the island continues to modernise its military capabilities in response to increasing pressure from Beijing.
