Taipei said it has not been informed of plans to break down future American military shipments into smaller tranches, a move that could affect the timing and visibility of defence transfers to the self-governed island.

Taiwan denies receiving notification of US arms sales restructuring

Taiwan's government said on Wednesday it had received no official communication regarding proposals to fragment US arms sales into smaller increments, responding to reports about potential changes to how military aid is delivered.

The statement comes as tensions remain elevated across the Taiwan Strait, with defence cooperation between Washington and Taipei continuing to draw sharp criticism from Beijing. China, which claims Taiwan as part of its territory, has consistently objected to military support for the island and called for an end to such transfers.

US military assistance to Taiwan has been a persistent flashpoint in cross-strait relations. Washington maintains unofficial ties with Taiwan and is bound by the Taiwan Relations Act to provide the island with defensive weapons, though the pace and scale of such sales have varied under different administrations.

Taipei's clarification suggests any restructuring of arms sales arrangements would require formal notification through official channels. The island's defence ministry did not elaborate on whether it had received any informal indications of changing US policy, nor did it comment on the potential implications of such changes for its security planning.

Both Taipei and Washington have historically emphasised the importance of maintaining adequate defence capabilities for Taiwan, citing the need to preserve stability in one of Asia's most strategically sensitive regions.
