Taiwan's representative in Washington moved to allay concerns about the state of US-Taiwan relations on Wednesday, describing ties as robust in the wake of the Trump-Xi summit held in September. The de facto ambassador stressed that the strategic partnership between Taipei and Washington continues to function effectively despite the recent engagement between the American and Chinese leaders.
While welcoming the diplomatic exchange between Washington and Beijing, Taipei's envoy emphasised that Taiwan's security interests remain a priority. The envoy highlighted the critical importance of maintaining the regular supply of defensive military equipment to the self-governing island, pointing out that timely deliveries are essential for maintaining the current stability in cross-strait relations.
The comments come at a time of heightened scrutiny over how Washington balances its diplomatic relations with both Beijing and Taipei. Taiwan has long relied on US military support as a counterbalance to China's growing military capabilities. The envoy's remarks seek to reinforce that defence commitments to Taiwan have not been diminished by recent high-level talks between Washington and Beijing.
Official relations between Washington and Taipei remain unofficial in nature, conducted through de facto diplomatic channels rather than formal government-to-government ties, reflecting the complex diplomatic landscape in the region. The envoy's statement is likely aimed at reassuring both the Taiwan government and regional observers about the durability of the US security commitment to the island.
