Taiwan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Defence Ministry said on Tuesday they are maintaining close surveillance of Chinese military activities following Beijing's announcement of live-fire exercises across five maritime zones from October 8 onwards.
China's maritime authorities issued no-sail notices for the designated drill areas, restricting civilian vessel access during the exercise period. However, the notified zones do not include waters immediately adjacent to Taiwan, distinguishing this announcement from previous military activities that have directly surrounded the island.
Taiwanese officials did not provide specific details regarding the scale or duration of the announced drills. The exercises come amid persistent tensions across the Taiwan Strait, where military posturing by Beijing has become increasingly frequent over recent months.
Taiwan's defence establishment said it maintains adequate situational awareness of developments in the region and will continue monitoring Chinese military movements. The island's armed forces have previously stated their readiness to respond to any potential security threats.
The announcement reflects ongoing strategic competition in the region as China continues to advance its military capabilities and operational tempo near Taiwan.
