Taiwan reassures Paraguay ties remain solid after presidential resignation

Taipei said Friday that the resignation of Paraguayan President Santiago Peña would not undermine the longstanding friendship between the two nations. The statement came as Peña stepped down following a significant bank collapse that has shaken confidence in Paraguay's financial sector.

Taiwan has maintained diplomatic ties with Paraguay for decades, making the country one of Taiwan's few remaining allies in South America. Officials in Taipei emphasised that institutional relationships would continue regardless of leadership changes in Asunción.

The banking crisis that precipitated Peña's departure has raised concerns about economic stability in Paraguay. However, Taiwanese officials signalled their intention to maintain regular engagement with Paraguay's government during this period of transition.

Taiwan's statement underscores the strategic importance Taipei places on its diplomatic relationships in Latin America, a region where it faces ongoing pressure from Beijing to recognise the People's Republic of China instead.
