The arrival of the advanced F-16V fighter jets represents a milestone in Taiwan's efforts to modernise its ageing air force and strengthen its defensive posture. The Viper variant, produced by US defence contractor Lockheed Martin, features enhanced avionics, improved engine performance and upgraded combat systems compared to earlier F-16 models.
Taiwan has faced escalating military incursions by China's People's Liberation Army in recent months, with Chinese aircraft regularly conducting operations near the island. The acquisition of the F-16Vs is intended to bolster Taiwan's air-to-air and air-to-ground capabilities, providing Taipei with more sophisticated tools to respond to potential threats.
However, the delivery occurs amid growing uncertainty in Taiwan about future US military support. Officials in Taipei are closely watching the incoming Trump administration's approach to arms sales and security commitments to the island, a sensitive issue in US-China relations.
The United States maintains a decades-long informal defence relationship with Taiwan, though it has no formal military alliance with the island. Washington is bound by the Taiwan Relations Act to provide defensive weapons and military training to help Taipei maintain a credible deterrent against Chinese military coercion.
