Taiwan surges ahead of South Korea in global stock market performance

Taiwan's stock market has decisively outpaced South Korea's in recent trading, with the Taiex Index posting gains approximately 23 percentage points higher than the Kospi during the last quarter. This performance differential represents the widest margin between the two indices since the early 2000s, marking a notable shift in regional market leadership.

The divergence reflects broader trends in technology sector investments across Asia, particularly in artificial intelligence and semiconductor manufacturing. Taiwan's dominance in chip production has positioned its equities favourably as global demand for AI-related semiconductors accelerates.

South Korea, traditionally a powerhouse in technology and electronics, has seen relative underperformance despite its own significant semiconductor and AI capabilities. Market analysts attribute the gap partly to sectoral rotation and investor preference for companies at the forefront of AI supply chain development.

The performance spread underscores how technological shifts can rapidly reshape investment flows in major Asian markets. Both economies remain critical to global tech infrastructure, but Taiwan's current advantage highlights investor focus on semiconductor leadership amid the AI boom affecting financial markets across the region.
