Taliban signals willingness to resolve Pakistan tensions through dialogue

The Afghan Taliban's Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi said on Monday that disputes between Afghanistan and Pakistan are amenable to resolution through dialogue and diplomatic engagement.

The remarks signal the Taliban administration's preference for negotiated settlement of outstanding issues with its eastern neighbour, despite persistent tensions between the two countries since the Taliban's return to power in August 2021.

Relations between Kabul and Islamabad have been tested by cross-border security concerns, including allegations of militant activity and disputes over the Durand Line border demarcation. Pakistan has repeatedly expressed concern about terrorist groups operating from Afghan soil, while Afghanistan has accused Pakistan of harbouring anti-Afghan elements.

Muttaqi's statement reflects the Taliban government's broader diplomatic strategy of normalising relations with regional and international actors. The emphasis on dialogue comes as Afghanistan seeks international recognition and economic engagement following the collapse of the Western-backed government.
