Tamil Nadu accuses Karnataka of flouting Cauvery water management orders

Tamil Nadu has lodged a formal complaint against Karnataka, asserting that the neighbouring state has shown scant regard for orders issued by the Cauvery Waters Management Authority (CWMA), resulting in significant hardship for farmers dependent on the river basin.

The complaint centres on Karnataka's alleged non-compliance with CWMA directives governing water distribution and management in the Cauvery system. Tamil Nadu contends that such lapses have deprived its farmers of legitimate water entitlements, hampering agricultural activities across the basin region.

The Cauvery dispute has been a contentious issue between the two states for decades, with periodic conflicts over water sharing agreements and implementation of court-mandated allocations. The CWMA was established following Supreme Court rulings to ensure equitable distribution and adherence to prescribed water management protocols.

Tamil Nadu's latest grievance reflects broader concerns about regulatory enforcement and inter-state coordination on the Cauvery. State officials have indicated they may escalate the matter through appropriate channels if Karnataka does not demonstrate improved compliance with CWMA orders.

Karnataka has not immediately responded to the allegations. Water management remains a critical issue for both agrarian-dependent states, with stakeholders urging stronger adherence to established frameworks to prevent recurring disputes.
