Tamil Nadu allocates ₹100 crore to boost forest workforce capacity

The Tamil Nadu government has unveiled a ₹100-crore package aimed at bolstering the operational capacity of its forest field workforce, according to an announcement made in the state assembly. The initiative seeks to address staffing and resource constraints within the forest department as it grapples with escalating environmental pressures.

In a parallel move, the administration announced plans to transform 200 schools and five colleges into Blue-Green campuses, integrating environmental sustainability into educational infrastructure across the state.

The forest department's investment comes alongside a comprehensive ₹60.58-crore Forest Fire Management Plan that will be rolled out over a five-year period. Officials cited the rising frequency of forest fires in Tamil Nadu as a key driver for the plan's formulation, underscoring growing challenges posed by wildfires in the region's forest ecosystems.

The dual approach reflects the state government's broader strategy to strengthen environmental governance while embedding sustainability principles into education.
