Tamil Nadu allocates ₹198 crore honorarium for 2026 election officials

The Tamil Nadu government has authorized a payment of ₹198 crore as honorarium for officials and staff members engaged in conducting the 2026 Assembly election, according to a Government order issued by the Public (Elections) Department.

As per the directive, eligible personnel will receive honorarium equivalent to one month's basic pay, subject to a maximum ceiling of ₹45,000, whichever amount is lower. The decision reflects the state administration's recognition of the extensive responsibilities undertaken by election officials during the electoral process.

The allocation is part of standard electoral administration procedures in Tamil Nadu, which typically compensates government personnel for their involvement in election-related duties. Such honorariums are intended to acknowledge the additional workload and commitment required from officials deployed across polling stations, election camps, and administrative centers during the election period.

The 2026 Assembly election in Tamil Nadu is scheduled to determine the composition of the state legislative assembly. The honorarium allocation underscores the significant administrative machinery required to conduct democratic elections across the state, encompassing thousands of officials and support staff members.
