Tamil Nadu anti-corruption agency opens inquiry into alleged sand mining irregularities

The Tamil Nadu anti-corruption watchdog has launched a detailed probe into the alleged sand mining scam that reportedly occurred during the DMK government's tenure. The inquiry was initiated on the basis of a formal complaint lodged by the Directorate of Enforcement, which flagged serious irregularities in the extraction and management of river sand across multiple locations in the state.

The Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption (DVAC) has begun examining the circumstances surrounding the sand mining operations, with investigators focusing on the alleged violations in the licensing, extraction, and sale of sand from state rivers. The ED's complaint reportedly highlighted procedural lapses and regulatory breaches in the administration of these mining activities.

Sand mining remains a contentious issue in Tamil Nadu, with previous governments facing accusations of allowing unauthorized extraction that has raised environmental concerns while potentially enabling revenue loss to the state exchequer. The current investigation seeks to establish the extent of alleged irregularities and identify those responsible for any violations of mining norms and financial protocols.

The DVAC's decision to formally investigate follows growing scrutiny of mining-related activities in the state. Officials are expected to examine administrative records, licensing documents, and financial transactions related to sand extraction operations during the relevant period to determine if any laws were violated.
