The Bharatiya Janata Party's Tamil Nadu unit president K. Annamalai has urged the state government to constitute a specialized panel to undertake a fresh survey of land holdings in Megamalai, a biodiversity-rich region straddling the Western Ghats. The proposal aims to address longstanding disputes over land ownership and usage rights in the sensitive area.
Annamalai emphasized that protecting the region's forests and tiger reserve carries equal weight to safeguarding the livelihoods of communities who have inhabited the area for generations. The Megamalai region is home to indigenous and traditional populations whose economic activities have been intertwined with the landscape for centuries, creating complex questions about land tenure and conservation.
The call for a high-level survey committee reflects ongoing challenges in balancing environmental protection with local land rights in India's ecologically critical regions. Similar tensions have emerged in other parts of the Western Ghats, where efforts to preserve tiger habitats and forest ecosystems have sometimes conflicted with the interests of resident communities.
The Tamil Nadu government has not yet responded formally to the proposal. Experts suggest that any re-survey initiative would need to involve multiple stakeholders, including forest authorities, local representatives, and land-owning communities, to ensure a fair and comprehensive assessment of the situation.
