Tamil Nadu boosts health insurance coverage fivefold to ₹25 lakh

Tamil Nadu has substantially enhanced its health insurance protection for citizens, raising the coverage ceiling under its scheme to ₹25 lakh from the previous ₹5 lakh limit. The expansion marks a significant step toward broadening healthcare accessibility across the state and reducing out-of-pocket expenditure for families facing major medical emergencies.

Chief Minister M.K. Stalin announced the increase as part of a broader healthcare strengthening initiative. The announcement also encompassed plans for a new multi-specialty hospital to be established at Perambur, aimed at improving tertiary care infrastructure in the region.

Complementing these measures, the state government has allocated ₹674 crore specifically for its Cancer Care Mission. This dedicated funding reflects the state's commitment to tackling the disease burden through improved prevention, diagnosis, and treatment services across its healthcare network.

The combined announcements position Tamil Nadu among Indian states offering enhanced health coverage and represent a strategic focus on reducing healthcare disparities. Officials indicated that the expanded insurance scheme would benefit a substantial portion of the state's population, particularly those below the poverty line and economically vulnerable sections.
