Tamil Nadu braces for downpour as deep depression intensifies over Bay

Tamil Nadu is battening down for heavy rainfall as a meteorological system over the Bay of Bengal strengthens, with authorities ordering the closure of educational institutions in several districts as a precautionary measure. The India Meteorological Department's latest bulletin indicated that a depression tracked over the bay has moved in a southwesterly direction over the past six hours and has since intensified into a deep depression, signalling the potential for significant precipitation across the region.

The escalation in the system's intensity prompted state officials to suspend classes on October 26, reflecting growing concerns about waterlogging and flood risks in vulnerable areas. Schools across multiple districts were directed to remain shut, keeping students and staff indoors until the weather system passes.

The IMD is expected to issue regular updates on the system's trajectory and intensity as it approaches the Tamil Nadu coast. Residents in low-lying and flood-prone areas have been advised to remain vigilant, with local administration coordinating relief and rescue operations in anticipation of the rainfall.
