Tamil Nadu is facing a severe weather spell as the India Meteorological Department warned of continued heavy rainfall over the next three days. The alert comes as the state grapples with the fallout from relentless downpours, which claimed at least one life when a rain-triggered mudslide struck the Nilgiris district in the Western Ghats region.
In response to the deteriorating weather conditions, port authorities have taken precautionary measures along the Tamil Nadu coast. Cyclone warning signals have been hoisted at nine major ports, including Nagapattinam, Chennai, Cuddalore, Karaikal, Pamban, and Thoothukudi, signalling maritime hazards and advising vessel operators to exercise caution.
The IMD's three-day forecast suggests that rainfall intensity is unlikely to abate in the coming days, raising concerns about potential flash floods and additional landslides, particularly in hilly terrain. Authorities have urged residents in vulnerable areas to remain vigilant and follow official guidance as the weather system continues to affect the region.
State disaster management officials are on high alert, monitoring the situation closely and coordinating with district administrations to ensure timely response to emergencies. The combination of heavy rainfall and challenging topography continues to pose significant risks to life and infrastructure across Tamil Nadu.
