Police arrested Karthika, the Naam Tamilar Katchi (NTK) candidate for the Dharapuram bypolls, on October 4 following a demonstration against campaign restrictions imposed by state authorities. She and approximately 20 party workers were taken into custody after blocking a roadway to protest the denial of permission to conduct their campaign activities along a designated route.
The detention occurred amid heightened political tensions surrounding the bypoll campaign. The protesters were reportedly objecting to restrictions placed on their roadshow activities, particularly regarding the campaign route of Chief Minister Vijay.
NTK party chief Seeman has issued a sharp rebuke against the state government, condemning what he characterises as heavy-handed tactics against the opposition party's electoral activities. His comments underscore growing friction between the ruling dispensation and the regional outfit during the electoral process.
The incident reflects the intensifying political contest ahead of the Dharapuram bypoll, with different parties facing varying degrees of regulatory scrutiny during their campaign activities. Authorities have not yet issued formal charges against those detained, and details regarding their release remain unclear.
