Tamil Nadu CM announces free LPG cylinders, bus travel for marginalized groups

Chief Minister MK Stalin announced multiple welfare schemes during the Tamil Nadu assembly session on Thursday, signaling the state government's focus on supporting economically disadvantaged and marginalized communities.
Under the expanded welfare framework, families earning less than Rs 2.5 lakh annually will receive three free LPG cylinders annually beginning with Pongal 2027. The initiative forms part of the government's broader 'Annapurnayni Super Six' programme, for which the state has allocated Rs 4,000 crore in the current budget cycle.
In addition to the fuel subsidy, the government has announced free public transportation for women and transgender passengers across Tamil Nadu's bus network. The move is designed to improve mobility and reduce transportation costs for vulnerable populations.
These announcements reflect the DMK government's continued commitment to implementing subsidy-based welfare schemes that have formed a cornerstone of its electoral promises. The initiatives are expected to benefit millions of households across the state, particularly in rural and semi-urban areas where liquefied gas access remains limited.
