Tamil Nadu CM inspects power utility amid rising demand concerns

Tamil Nadu's Chief Minister made a surprise visit to TNDPCL headquarters on Monday to assess the state's power management challenges as electricity demand continues to surge. During the inspection, senior officials briefed the CM on the critical issues facing the power distribution sector, including the sharp spike in consumption across the state and the corresponding difficulties in meeting the growing load.

TNDPCL officials highlighted the constraints in procuring additional electricity from the power exchange to bridge the widening demand-supply gap. The power utility has been struggling to source sufficient electricity at competitive rates to meet the state's consumption needs, which have risen significantly in recent months.

The officials also apprised the CM of supply-chain challenges affecting coal availability, a key input for thermal power generation. These constraints have compounded the difficulties in maintaining stable power supply across Tamil Nadu's distribution network.

The inspection underscores the government's focus on addressing the state's power sector challenges as it faces mounting pressure to ensure reliable electricity supply across residential, commercial, and industrial sectors. The visit is expected to facilitate better coordination between the government and the power utility in tackling these structural issues.
