Tamil Nadu CM oversees rollout of expanded women's free bus travel scheme

Tamil Nadu's Chief Minister M.K. Stalin has reviewed the implementation status of the expanded Vetri Payanam scheme, the state's flagship free bus travel initiative for women. The review underscores the government's commitment to rolling out the programme across a wider range of transport services.

The scheme, previously known as Vidiyal Payanam, was recently announced for expansion beyond standard ordinary bus services. Under the new framework, women passengers will now benefit from free travel on Express buses, Long-distance Super Special (LSS) services, Deluxe coaches, Mofussil Ordinary buses, and Ghat Ordinary services operated by the Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation (TNSTC).

The comprehensive expansion reflects the state government's effort to enhance mobility access for women across urban and rural regions. By integrating multiple bus categories, the scheme aims to ensure that women from diverse geographic locations and socioeconomic backgrounds can avail themselves of the benefit irrespective of their travel distance or destination.

The CM's review of preparation activities suggests that the state administration is focused on the logistical and operational readiness required for the scheme's successful implementation. The expanded coverage is expected to significantly increase the number of beneficiaries under the initiative and establish Tamil Nadu as a leader in gender-focused public transport policies in India.
