Tamil Nadu CM to press Andhra Pradesh on Krishna water allocation

Chief Minister M.K. Stalin is scheduled to meet Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu to address Tamil Nadu's water allocation from the Krishna river. The meeting is expected to focus on implementing the 1983 Telugu Ganga agreement, which mandates an annual supply of 15 Thousand Million Cubic feet (TMC) of Krishna water at the Tamil Nadu border to meet Chennai's requirements.

The timing of the engagement reflects growing concerns over water availability in the region. Sources indicate that current storage levels in key reservoirs—Srisailam, Somasila, and Kandaleru—are substantially below normal capacity, constraining the volume available for release.

Given the constraints, officials from both states are likely to discuss a revised allocation formula for the current year. A partial release of the agreed quantum appears to be the anticipated compromise, pending improvements in reservoir levels during the upcoming monsoon season.

The Krishna river water-sharing arrangement has long been a point of interstate coordination between Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh. This meeting underscores the critical importance of such dialogues in managing shared water resources across state boundaries during periods of scarcity.
