Tamil Nadu CM unveils ₹4,800-crore desalination project to boost water supply

Tamil Nadu's Chief Minister M.K. Stalin has proposed a large-scale desalination facility in Minjur with an investment of ₹4,800 crore, aimed at addressing the state's growing water scarcity challenges. The plant is designed to produce 400 million litres of potable water daily, significantly augmenting the region's freshwater availability.

The announcement was made during the state Assembly proceedings, where Stalin outlined the government's strategic approach to managing water resources amid rising demand from urban and industrial sectors. The Minjur facility is expected to serve multiple districts and alleviate pressure on existing supply infrastructure across the state.

In addition to the desalination initiative, the Chief Minister announced a dedicated ₹500-crore drinking water project for Avadi, a suburban locality in the greater Chennai region. The dual-pronged approach reflects the government's commitment to enhancing water security through both large-scale infrastructure development and localized interventions.

These projects are part of Tamil Nadu's broader strategy to address chronic water shortages that have periodically affected urban settlements and agricultural regions. Officials indicated that both initiatives would undergo standard clearance processes before implementation.
