Tamil Nadu CM Vijay denies body-shaming Stalin with Assembly gesture

The Tamil Nadu Chief Minister on Wednesday dismissed suggestions that a gesture made during his Assembly speech was intended to mock former Chief Minister and DMK president M.K. Stalin's physical appearance. The clarification came after the CPI(M) State secretary P. Shanmugam objected to what he characterized as body-shaming directed at Stalin, particularly referencing the jaw injury Stalin sustained during his detention under the Maintenance of Internal Security Act (MISA) during India's Emergency period.

The Chief Minister stated that his gesture during the Assembly address was inadvertent and lacked any ulterior motive or malicious intent. He emphasized that there was no deliberate attempt to ridicule or denigrate anyone's physical condition.

The incident highlights the sensitivity surrounding references to Stalin's detention-era injuries in Tamil Nadu politics. Stalin's jaw injury, sustained while in MISA custody, has remained a significant part of his political narrative and public identity in the state.
