SALEM — Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin is likely to inaugurate the opening of Mettur Dam on August 28, officials said, bringing relief to irrigation-dependent farmers in the Cauvery Delta region after a delayed water release this season.
The ceremonial opening, scheduled to take place at the dam site in Salem district, comes after insufficient water storage prevented the release of water on the customary date of June 12. The delay has pushed back the start of the irrigation season in delta districts that depend critically on Cauvery water supplies.
Salem District Collector conducted an inspection of the dam in preparation for the Chief Minister's visit. An official announcement confirming the exact date and arrangements is expected soon, according to sources familiar with the development.
The Mettur Dam opening traditionally signals the beginning of the irrigation season in Tamil Nadu's Cauvery Delta region, one of the state's key agricultural areas.
