Tamil Nadu Congress seeks court nod for Kamaraj birth anniversary marathon

The human rights division of the Tamil Nadu Congress Committee filed a petition in the Madras High Court on Monday, challenging the police's refusal to grant permission for the planned mini-marathon event. The event was scheduled to mark the 124th birth anniversary of K. Kamaraj, the legendary Chief Minister who led the state from 1954 to 1962.

According to the petition, the Congress committee submitted formal applications to the police department seeking authorization for the marathon well in advance of the planned date. However, the police have not granted the necessary permission for the event, prompting the Congress to seek judicial intervention.

K. Kamaraj, regarded as a towering figure in Tamil Nadu's political history, is remembered for his administrative reforms and role in national politics during India's early post-independence period. Commemorative events celebrating his birth anniversary are traditionally held across the state.

The High Court is expected to hear the petition and examine whether the police's denial of permission for the peaceful commemorative event was justified. The case raises questions about the grounds cited by authorities for refusing permission to conduct the marathon.
