Tamil Nadu defers breakfast scheme expansion to September 22

The Tamil Nadu government announced on Thursday that the expansion of the Perunthalaivar Kamarajar Breakfast Scheme has been deferred to September 22, citing electoral considerations in certain regions.

The scheme will be implemented across all districts except Chengalpattu and Tiruppur, where the Model Code of Conduct remains in force ahead of assembly byelections scheduled for the Madurantakam and Dharapuram constituencies.

The delay ensures administrative compliance with electoral guidelines while allowing the state to proceed with rolling out the meal programme in other districts. The breakfast scheme aims to provide nutritional support to schoolchildren and is considered a flagship welfare initiative of the state government.

Once the code of conduct restrictions are lifted following the completion of byelection activities in the two districts, the scheme will be extended to those areas as well, officials indicated.
